Detection of multiple viral and bacterial infections in acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A pilot prospective study

This study estimated the burden of multiple viral and bacterial respiratory infections in moderate to very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients that were prospectively followed‐up during a 12‐month pilot study. Clinical data were collected monthly and sputum was collected at the time of each acute exacerbation event. Classical culture techniques for bacteria and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and microarray detection assays were performed to identify viral and atypical bacterial pathogens in the sputum. Overall, 51 patients were included and 45 acute exacerbation events were investigated clinically and microbiologically. Among the 45 acute exacerbation events, 44% had evidence of viral infection involving human rhinovirus (HRV) and metapneumovirus (hMPV) in ...

Redefining approaches to asthma: developing targeted biologic therapies.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder canonically associated with type 2 airway inflammation as characterized by elevated levels of eosinophils, immunoglobulin E, and cytokines including interleukin (IL) 4, IL5, IL9, and IL13 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α. However, mounting evidence has shown that considerable heterogeneity exists in human asthma in terms of the nature and intensity of airway inflammation.

While many asthma patients achieve acceptable control of symptoms with standard-of-care therapies such as β(2)-adrenergic agonists and inhaled corticosteroids, a minority remains symptomatic despite maximal standard-of-care therapy and constitutes a significant unmet medical need. A growing number of investigational th...

Serum heavy metal levels increased in lung disease patients

Results from a large US study suggest that individuals with obstructive lung disease, particularly smokers, have significantly increased blood levels of cadmium and lead. (Source: MedWire News - Respiratory)

Inhaled steroids may increase S. pneumoniae infection risk

Children with asthma who regularly use inhaled corticosteroids are at significantly increased risk for oropharyngeal colonization by Staphylococcus pneumonia, research suggests. (Source: MedWire News - Respiratory)

Review: Oncogenes in non-small-cell lung cancer: emerging connections and novel therapeutic dynamics

Source: Lancet Respiratory Medicine Area: News This review aims to provide an overview of the developments in the area of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), focusing on the functional associations between key oncogenes involved in tumour formation. These mechanisms are crucial in NSCLC onset and progression and are emerging as clinically relevant diagnostic and therapeutically actionable targets. The following topics are discussed:   . Oncogene addiction: the EGFR paradigm . Molecular profiling as a guide to therapy . Molecular lesions in squamous-cell carcinomas . Tumour heterogeneity . Resistance and kinase switching . Clinical phenotypes identified by genetic lesions . Biology and applications of microRNA profiles . Therap...
